Dark Sector is Free Right Now on Steam
Back in 2008, Digital Extremes released on the Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 the third person action shooter Dark Sector. The game was a form of progenitor to some of the concepts that made it into their next title that has made Digital Extremes what it is today, Warframe. As a surprise black friday treat, Digital Extremes has made the game free to own on Steam, as it was released a year after its launch on consoles. But there may be more to this than just a simple holiday giveaway.
Why is Dark Sector free?
As a lead up to Warframe: 1999, Digital Extremes started an augmented reality game or ARG on their website. Obviously, with how dedicated the community is, and how ingrained many Tenno are with puzzle solving, the ARG was solved, and every Tenno got a code to redeem for a cool in-game item in Warframe. For those who want the code who do not want to go through the step-by-step process of solving the puzzle themselves it is:
“TH3GR8D3SP41R”
You can redeem this code for a free poster of the fictitious boy band in the Warframe universe known as On-Lyne. Just simply go to the in-game market and enter the code.
As for why Dark Sector is free, however. It may just be simply an additional reward from Digital Extremes, as most players are on PC and the game is only $9.99 usually. There has been much speculation from the community that the game has direct ties to Warframe, and may end up becoming canon after Warframe: 1999 launches. This would allow players on PC to enjoy the title for free and pick up on many potential references outside of the obvious visual ones and the fact the game’s main character is named “Hayden Tenno“.
Sadly, for those who play on Xbox or PlayStation consoles, you cannot get the game for free as it is not available through backwards compatibility on either current generation system.
You can claim Dark Sector on your Steam account here and enjoy a blast from the late 2000s era of gaming. Just be sure to claim it before November 30th!
Update
This offer is no longer available. Dark Sector is still available on Steam for $9.99, however.
