Minecraft Dungeons 2 Review – A Coming of Age

Title shot of Minecraft Dungeons 2

What is Minecraft Dungeons 2?

Action RPGs have been around for a long time. No doubt the Diablo franchise helped propel the genre to the mainstream masses during the 1990s and early 2000s. From there, ARPGs keep iterating and have blossomed into a pillar of mainstream gaming. Mojang and Double Eleven team up once again to take the voxel world of Minecraft to ARPG fans. Like the sophomore album of your favorite band, Minecraft Dungeons 2 continues its foray into the ARPG world with meaningful improvements, a true coming-of-age moment.

A Simple Story with High Stakes

The Sift region with a portal to the Overworld in Minecraft Dungeons 2
  • The Illager High Council set forth to dominate the Overworld by harnessing the power and secrets of the Sift, an undiscovered secret dimension.
  • Players act as the last defense and must traverse the Overworld and the Sift to combat and deter the Illager threat.
  • The story moves forward through its often comedic cutscenes and is serviceable at best.

The premise is a simple setup in Minecraft Dungeons 2. The scattered Illager factions have put aside their differences to establish the Illager High Council to coordinate their campaign to dominate the Overworld. The Illagers’ desire for power eventually leads them to discover and unlock the potential of the alternate dimension that is known as the Sift. The Council seeks to exploit its secrets and raw power to dominate the entire Overworld.

Of course, that is where you, the player, come in. As a last resort, you journey from the town of Brave Haven to the far reaches of the Overworld and the Sift to put a stop to the Illegar High Council’s dominance before it becomes permanent.

The story fits nicely within Minecraft lore and, despite having some high stakes, it’s kinda cute with the voxel graphics of the game. The cutscenes push the straightforward narrative in an often comedic style that Minecraft fans are acquainted with. Especially one cutscene where a cute little critter, turned out to be a recurring enemy in the Sift. However, don’t expect a riveting story with memorable characters. The game just provides enough context for your adventure.

An Overworld and an Open World and a Jump Button

  • A seamless open world with settlements, dynamic dungeon layouts, and fast-travel points replaces the linear mission-select map.
  • A dedicated jump mechanic enables multi-level platforming, hidden paths, and vertical ground-slam attacks in combat.
  • An active quest log manages main story arcs across the Overworld and the “Sift” dimension alongside optional side quests.

Minecraft Dungeons 2 ditches the game’s previous level system and embraces a seamless open-world Overworld and Sift alternative realm. Undoubtedly, this decision is more aligned with modern ARPG standards, and it is well realized in MD2. The seamless traversal and fast travel points make it easier than ever to traverse both the Overworld and the Sift. Of course, there are secret walls and floors that players are encouraged to discover, which is always fun.

Best of all, with the new handy dandy jump button (mapped to the A button, of course!), Minecraft Dungeons 2 adds a nice vertical element to the action. Jumping from platform to platform to reach for that shiny chest from afar is quite satisfying, especially since the jumping mechanics are controlled oh so well. Further, jump attacks are a thing now and add a little more nuance to combat as well. Some weapons will have special jump attacks, for instance, casting lightning AOE around your point of impact. It’s a smart way of encouraging mixing it up when it comes to combat.

Another new, and quite frankly underrated, quality-of-life feature is the inclusion of a quest log to help track your main and side quests. The log helps keep everything clear on what needs to be done next. In addition, the map will highlight the locations of quest givers and their new points of interest. This is quite the contrast from the mission list found in Minecraft Dungeons.

Massive Gear Overhaul Expands Build Craft Potential

  • Doubles overall combat equipment slots from 6 to 12 and splits full-body armor into four individual customizable pieces.
  • Implements self-recharging infinite ammunition for all bows and crossbows, alongside three new Talisman slots for passive stat modifiers.
  • Replaces random enchantment drops with collectable Enchantment Books to build a permanent library for direct upgrades at the Enchantsmith.

In Minecraft Dungeons 2, the game overhauled its character and gear progression for the better. Now, the game provides 12 equipment slots, giving players far more freedom to theorycraft. Armor is no longer restricted to a single set piece, allowing heroes to mix Helms, Chests, Leggings, and Boots to combine passive bonuses. Bonuses include decreased ranged damage, debuff defense, faster arrow regeneration, and many more. This brings MD2 closer to other modern ARPGs. Definitely a “coming of age” moment for the franchise.

Ranged combat is also streamlined, as infinite self-recharging ammunition removes the frustration of running out of arrows during boss fights. This on its own is immensely useful, especially for challenging boss fights (more on that below).

In addition, Artifacts provide three new slots that act as your skills. Artifacts provide extra passive stat boosts and specialized build modifiers to further refine playstyles. My go-to Artifacts were ones that focused on status effect arrows and power buffs. Occasionally, I like using rocket Artifacts to help with crowd-controlling mobs. The third slot was more of a ‘mood’ slot where I could mix and match whatever the circumstance needed.

A Talisman A Day Keeps the Illegars Away

  • Talisman adds buildcraft potential with buffs and companions.
  • Upgrading gear is more predictable and rewarding compared to the first game.
  • Enchantment books help keep upgrades organized.

The game’s Talisman system also introduces additional buildcraft potential. Talismans provide additional buffs or even furry creatures to fight by your side. Best of all, players can level up Talismans up to level three to improve their stats. And there are plenty of different Talisman types to play with.

Gear upgrading (via the Blacksmith and Enchantsmith) is now far more predictable and rewarding than in the original game. By collecting Enchantment Books, players build a permanent library that allows them to apply and upgrade specific enchantments directly at the Enchantsmith. These quality-of-life features make it a much more streamlined experience and nestle MD2 much closer to its genre peers.

The game no longer relies on random enchantment drops. Instead, players will collect Enchantment Books to build a collection (or dare I say a library) of books to provide direct upgrades at the Enchantsmith.

Challenging and Repetitive Boss Fights

  • Boss fights are challenging and act as gear checks for players
  • Simple to respawn back into a boss fight due to a plethora of checkpoints
  • Boss designs get repetitive and in some instances, would glitch out and stand still

As any self-respecting ARPG, Minecraft Dungeons 2 throws bosses your way as milestones and to spice things up. These bosses are unequivocal skill/gear checks on players and will prove to be challenging. That is why bosses always present an opportunity to revamp and check your builds.

Even if you die regularly from boss fights (or anywhere really), it isn’t a major setback. The game will respawn you back in Brave Haven, and you can simply teleport to your last checkpoint; there are plenty of them around in the Overworld and the Sift.

After a while, you’ll notice the game recycles boss characters, and that gets quite repetitive. You’ll get your bull-type boss and the giant boss with the teeth for a torso. There are enchanters as well, and it just becomes bland after a while. In some instances, bosses would glitch out and stop moving all of a sudden. This happened in two occurrences, which made the fights much easier, obviously, but it is worth pointing out.

Soul Storms End Game Content

  • Soul Storms are Minecraft Dungeons 2’s main end-game content.
  • Overrun areas with high-tier loot and challenging enemies encourage co-op play.

Minecraft Dungeons 2 does feature an end-game phase known as Soul Storms. Similar to Helltides in Diablo 4, Soul Storms see an entire area overrun by stronger, more numerous enemies (chicken jockeys included!). Of course, the main incentive to venture to Soul Storms is to nab some higher-quality loot.

No doubt Soul Storms encourage co-op play, build experimentation, and optimization, so players get more value and time with the game. However, Mojang and Deep Games did confirm that there’s more end-game content to come, which is always exciting.

Minecraft Dungeons 2 Graphics

  • Minecraft Dungeons 2 continues its stellar voxel graphics and art style, staying true to the franchise.
  • Plenty of biome diversity, including plains, forests, ice regions, and an alternate dimension in the Sift.
  • Powered by Unreal Engine 5, the game performs admirably, with slight slowdowns in high-action moments.

Continuing Minecraft’s trademark voxel graphics, Minecraft Dungeons 2 oozes its bigger cousin’s look to its very essence. The game is immaculately recreated in Unreal Engine 5 and fits in perfectly within the wider Minecraft universe. The voxel art style is a joy and always captivated my children when they played, a nice little pull to get them into MD2. Especially when you factor in the chicken jockey enemy that always gets a chuckle from younger fans.

Starting in a rural setting environment players are accustomed to in the Overworld, the game covers all the bases when it comes to biome diversity. You get tried-and-true greenery plains, forests, swamps, the alternate dimension of the Sift, icy zones, and more! The game did a good job covering the bases and making sure players do not get bored of remaining in the same biome for too long.

The game performs admirably on the XBOX Series X running at a smooth 60 FPS. There were hardly any hiccups, but in some intense battles with voxelated (a word that I am now investing) particles flying around, it did cause some stutters. Other than that, Mojang and Double Eleven did a great job on performance.

(RK – No notes, love how you express how the voxel art style benefits the game’s graphics, and actively saying your kids were engaged because of them is brilliant. This is made for kids, mainly, so making it clear that this game will appeal to them is an awesome touch).

A (Miss) Guiding Light

  • The Guiding Light that takes you to the next objective can be finicky.
  • Spamming it helps set you in the right direction.

The main issue faced during my playthrough deals with the guidance line. Luckily, there are no Jean Gray fart scents in this game. Instead, you get the tried-and-true yellow line that guides you to your next objective when you click the left analog stick. However, early in the review process, I noticed that the guideline would sometimes take you to dead ends.

This hindered progress and was frustrating. Especially when the location you needed to travel seemed on the other side of barriers and unreachable enclosures. Fortunately, I was able to remedy this misfiring guiding light by simply spamming the Left Stick to course-correct. I admit it was a simple fix, but one that constantly tried to redirect me, despite taking me to dead ends a few times.

Pause? What Pause

  • Minecraft Dungeons 2 doesn’t support a fully functional pause feature in offline mode.

One thing that did irk me was that the game did not feature a proper pause, even in offline mode. That’s right, when playing offline with no other players, you still cannot pause the game. This has proven to be an issue for me personally, especially with young children running around.

Plenty of Multiplayer Options

Multiplayer shot of 4 players on a bridge in Minecraft Dungeons 2
  • Adds open public matchmaking and party codes alongside complete cross-platform support.
  • Allows local couch co-op players to open menus simultaneously and adds one-click instant teammate teleportation.
  • Dynamically balances enemy stats and loot quality based on party size and drop-in players.

Mojang and Double Eleven have taken feedback to heart when it comes to the multiplayer options for Minecraft Dungeons 2. Luckily, multiplayer improvements help players get into games faster and on a more consistent basis. Players now have options for open public matchmaking, and simple party codes help support full cross-platform support.

Local co-op still reigns supreme with local couch co-op. Best of all, both players can access menus at the same time, and instant teammate teleportation helps keep your party together.

Lastly, Minecraft Dungeons 2 provides a dynamic difficulty scaling system that regularly monitors active sessions. Enemy health bars, damage output, and high-tier loot drops are adjusted automatically whenever players join or leave sessions.

Minecraft 2 Accessibility Options

  • Minecraft Dungeons 2 provides plenty of visual and audio accessibility features.
  • This includes mono, voice-over subtitles, colorblind mode, and more.

Minecraft Dungeons 2, like other Xbox Game Studios titles, has plenty to offer when it comes to accessibility options. The game has mono audio, voice-over subtitles, subtitle size, and text options for those who want a clearer font. In addition, MD2 also provides color blind mode and high-contrast options. While it might not have all the bells and whistles of other titles released over the years, Minecraft Dungeons 2 covers its accessibility bases well.

Final Thoughts on Minecraft Dungeons 2

Minecraft Dungeons 2 delivers meaningful upgrades across the board. By expanding gear and ability slots, the game offers plenty of buildcraft experimentation. The seamless open world of the Overworld and the Sift brings it closer to its ARPG big-hitter peers. The online options provide plenty of ways to play together. Simply put, this is the ultimate coming-of-age moment for the Minecraft Dungeons franchise.
