2024 Golden Lance Award for Game of the Year

3 minutes read

This is it. After a record nineteen award categories this year, we come at last to Game of the Year. The Game of the Year was a two-horse race from the moment voting opened. You’ll see why in the write-ups below. The amount of passion that was felt by the staff about games this year was unmatched in the four years of Lords of Gaming’s history. It is a testament to the grandeur of the experiences that came out this year. More than that, it spoke to something deep within us about what we love about games. Choice, well-realized worlds, dramatic set-pieces, and stunning visuals. These games are some of the best in history at what they do. They will be remembered far beyond this year. With that said, here are the winners of Lords of Gaming’s 2024 Golden Lance Award for Game of the Year.

Winner – Metaphor: ReFantazio

It’s no wonder Metaphor ReFantazio was the big hit it was. Atlus always delivers when it comes to incredible traditional RPG experiences. Metaphor ReFantazio was a new foray into fantasy for a company most known for demonic and religious themes and repetitive high school drama. But the shining traits from their previous series shine even brighter here.
The day-to-day system is used effectively to flesh out the new world they’ve crafted. The combat has the style and flair of Persona with all of the depth of Shin Megami Tensei, and the class system of Final Fantasy woven into it all. Creating a gameplay experience that gratifies the layered narrative, fantastical twists, and brutal villains. With a cast of companions that I will never forget, and wish I could have experienced more of, even after the near hundred hours the journey is comprised of. Congratulations to Atlus on their well-earned triumph with Metaphor ReFantazio.

Runner Up – Call of Duty: Black Ops 6

In 2024 most games pick their lane. Either choosing to fully go in the single-player direction or choosing to go full multiplayer with PvP and PvE modes. The reason why Black Ops 6 gets my vote for Game of the Year is that no other game that has come out in 2024 gives players a diverse and immersive single-player offering, a fleshed-out co-operative experience in zombies, and a full-featured multiplayer PVP suite. Black Ops 6 does this all while having plenty of accessibility options and the icing on the cake is the game runs great on current platforms.
