It’s that time of year again! Summer Games Fest and the Xbox Showcase return, revealing exciting new titles and updates on existing ones. The Iron Lords were on the showfloor, going hands-on with Skybound Games and Quater Up’s Invincible VS.
What is Invincible VS?
Created by former developers who worked on Killer Instinct on Xbox One, the superhero series Invincible receives its first proper video game in the form of a 3v3 tag fighter. In addition to traditional 3v3 fighting, several modes are coming to the game. Here’s some information regarding that, taken from its official Steam listing.

Invincible VS features a variety of game modes including a captivating cinematic story mode with an original narrative from a writer of the animated series. Jump into Arcade and battle with your team, hone your combos in Training mode, and test your skills against the world in competitive and casual multiplayer. Show, comic fans, and fighting game lovers will experience unparalleled heroic brutality, where every earth-shattering blow will leave you feeling… Invincible.
Hands-On Impressions from Lord Cognito
Lord Cognito was able to go hands-on with Invincible VS, sharing his thoughts on the title alongside Lord King, giving additional context on why the IP is special. They discuss how, during the Xbox Showcase, this title got a huge pop-off from the crowd they watched it with. It helps that the reveal showcased the show’s known level of violence during the intense 3v3 gameplay.
Going hands-on with the game, Cog plays a match with the art director and talks to the combat director. He points out the combat director’s history in the fighting game community, ensuring that balance, meta, and making things stylish will be present in Invincible VS.

During his hands-on, Cog had access to four characters and the team breaking down character movesets, giving him a feel for the game. He noticed it felt similar to Marvel vs. Capcom, but pulling off moves felt easier. You can also power-up your attacks and see how the ‘tag in’ mechanic is woven into combos.
This contrasts with games like Tekken Tag or Marvel Vs. Capcom, where your team members show up for a move and then retreat.
Impressive Presentation of Invincible VS
One of the biggest things Cog noticed during his hands-on time was an impressive presentation. Having access to three stages, he experienced impressive dynamic battles that matched the scale and hype-factor scene in games like Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero.
These dynamic battles feature characters going from stage to stage, depending on the moves pulled off. From how he described it, I’m reminded of Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe, where characters fight across multi-stage arenas. A huge scale is important for superhero clashes, which matches the tone and vibe of the series proper.
Lastly, Cog mentions how violent and bloody battles can get, matching the show perfectly. Major battles from the series got gnarly at points, but in the best way possible.
Closing Thoughts
Promising a large roster, impressive battles, brutal presentation, and a return of 3v3 tag-batttles, Invincible VS is a fighter to keep an eye on. Being a fan of the series, I loved seeing Cog and King discuss their impressions of the reveal and hands-on battles.
