Surprised by the Destiny 2 Final Update News? So was Most of Bungie, Apparently

Witch Queen

Destiny 2 and its original entry, Destiny, were a game series beloved by many, myself included, for a time. It wasn’t until 2023 when Lightfall came out to an overwhelmingly negative reception, after the massive acquisition from Sony during the pandemic, that began a chain of bad luck for Bungie as a studio. As they were hit with multiple rounds of layoffs in 2023, 2024 and 2025, even with The Final Shape being a big hit at the time of its launch, despite selling worse than Lightfall. Not only that, but there were multiple art plagiriasm claims, especially one tied to Bungie’s newest game, Marathon that was especially damning.

This chain of bad luck, following the aftermath of the launch of Marathon earlier this year, would culminate in Bungie dropping continued support for Destiny 2, with a lot of developers apparently not knowing that was the plan. In a report from Jason Schreier of Bloomberg, he reported that Bungie is in a very rough shape. With no new projects being greenlit (including Destiny 3), and developers from Destiny 2 being moved to Marathon in recent months. But part of this report was the news that Sony is planning yet another significant round of layoffs at Bungie.

Layoffs are no laughing matter, as thousands upon thousands of actual human beings lost their dream jobs and main source of income in recent years. In the midst of these layoffs that Jason reported on being planned, a lot of developers at Bungie did not even know that support for the game would be dropped following the “last hurrah” update on June 9th, according to Paul Tassi from Forbes.

What More we Learned from Forbes About The End of Destiny 2 Situation

The article from Paul Tassi contains information from his own sources that you should definitely read here. Bungie reportedly already planned all of this earlier this year. Developers apparently were still kept in the dark and were still making new content for Destiny 2. Some people who were in the know begged leadership to communicate what was going on and apparently felt isolated in the process.

This isn’t even the most depressing part of the story. At a recent Bungie townhall meeting developers were actually asking their leadership about the scale of the impending layoffs. The leadership basically ignored the questions, which is not a good sign. What is also not a good sign is the hyperfixation on Marathon moving forward compared to Destiny 2. Marathon is an extraction shooter with very miniscule players counts that cannot sustain Bungie. Bungie is a massive studio and needs a more popular and successful IP to keep them afloat. The gambit on Marathon and not a Destiny 3 is widely baffling the online crowd. With Destin Legarie, formerly of IGN even expressing the same sentiment on Twitter/X.

We here at Lords of Gaming have already reported on the news from Thursday. You can find that article here, alongside game recommendations if you are a Destiny 2 player seeking a new game to call your home.
