Blizzard Entertainment officially revealed Diablo V during the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2026, giving fans their first glimpse at the next mainline entry in the long-running action RPG franchise. While the game is still several years away, Blizzard has already provided one major detail about its story: this time, Diablo has won.
Diablo V is currently in development and is targeting a Spring 2029 release. Instead of once again attempting to prevent Sanctuary from falling to the forces of Hell, players will enter a world where its heroes have already failed.

Diablo V Takes Place After Sanctuary Has Fallen
The premise behind Diablo V immediately separates the upcoming game from previous entries in the franchise.
Sanctuary has fallen, its heroes have been defeated, and Diablo has emerged victorious. Rather than building toward the possibility of the world being consumed by evil, Diablo V begins after that nightmare has already become reality.
Blizzard is using that premise to pose an important question for the next game: what must someone become to survive when the world has already fallen?
Exactly what that means for the player character remains unknown. But it provides an intriguing foundation for the next chapter of the franchise. Instead of fighting to preserve the Sanctuary players already know, the battle may now be about surviving or reclaiming a world that has already been lost.
Diablo V Is Coming in Spring 2029
Fans will have to wait a while before they can venture into this fallen version of Sanctuary. Blizzard is currently targeting Spring 2029 for Diablo V. An exact release date and platforms have not yet been announced.
The lengthy window also makes it clear that Diablo IV isn’t disappearing anytime soon. Blizzard continues to support the current game while preparing the franchise for its next mainline chapter. More information on Diablo V is expected as development continues, including details about its world and classes.
Diablo IV Still Has Plenty Ahead
The announcement of Diablo V doesn’t mean Blizzard is finished with Diablo IV.
During BlizzCon 2026, Blizzard revealed that the Amazon will join Diablo IV during the first half of 2027. Returning from earlier games in the franchise, the Amazon will feature four gameplay archetypes: Champion, Skirmisher, Ranger, and Commander.
The class will wield familiar weapons such as bows and javelins. The latter introduces a new weapon type to Diablo IV. Blizzard also announced that Diablo IV: Age of Hatred Collection is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on September 15. The collection includes the base game alongside the Vessel of Hatred and Lord of Hatred expansions.
Diablo Is Also Heading to Netflix
Blizzard is expanding the franchise beyond video games as well. A new animated series based in the world of Diablo is currently in development at Netflix. Few details about the project have been revealed, including when it will be released or what part of the franchise’s history it will explore. The announcement nevertheless represents another significant expansion for the franchise as Blizzard celebrates 30 years of Diablo.
A New Era for Diablo
There is still plenty we don’t know about Diablo V. Blizzard’s first reveal establishes a fascinating direction for the next game. Sanctuary falling and Diablo emerging victorious completely changes the starting point of the traditional battle between humanity and the forces of Hell.
With a Spring 2029 release window, there is plenty of time for Blizzard to reveal exactly what this fallen Sanctuary looks like. Which classes players will command and how the world has changed following Diablo’s victory. For now, the idea of beginning the next Diablo after the heroes have already lost gives the fifth mainline entry an intriguing identity of its own.
