When people think of Bungie, many think about Destiny. It’s a first-person shooter that has changed the gaming landscape in several ways. It not only took Halo’s fantastic gunplay and brought it into the pseudo-MMO genre, but it also cemented the importance of the live-service genre.
So when news hit in June 2026 that Destiny 2 would stop receiving support, it hit the Destiny community hard. And they fought back, holding the line and keeping that spirit alive.
Bungie heard those cries, loud and clear. Here’s everything they announced about Destiny’s future, and what’s next for the fabled FPS studio.
Honoring Mistakes – Where Bungie Is Today
As a studio, Bungie has made several stumbles in recent years, despite some of the highest points in Destiny 2 and the largely successful launch of the extraction shooter Marathon in 2026. Many voiced these failings, only for them to fall on deaf ears.
Thankfully, that feedback has been heard. Poria Torkan (Studio Head) and Josh Deane (Head of Product and General Manager of Marathon) said the following:
Over the last few years, we lost sight of that, and there have been real consequences. We lost trust, we lost incredible colleagues, and we lost sight of what we should be prioritizing most, our players. As a new leadership team, we must own that. We aren’t just listening to feedback, we understand your disappointment. We are not asking you to trust what we say today. We know that trust must be earned through the quality of our games, the decisions we make, and how consistently we show up for our players.
So, what is the plan? How will Bungie restore that trust?
Blasts from the Past – Restoring Vaulted Destiny 2 Content
One of the biggest criticisms lobbed at Bungie was the controversial decision to vault campaigns, raids, and more throughout Destiny 2’s long lifecycle. The company gave several reasons as to why the content was vaulted, but it resulted in the engaging story and world of Destiny being difficult to invest in
How can new Lights join the fight if they don’t know the context of the original mission? Thankfully, in the future, the vaulted content will be restored, with Bungie promising the following:
That begins with restoring important parts of Destiny 2’s history that players can no longer experience today.
We understand that removing these experiences had a lasting impact on player trust and enjoyment of Destiny. Destiny 2 is more than just the content itself. It is a place where players have built memories together, formed lasting friendships, and shared experiences that have stayed with them for years. We cannot change the decision we made, but we can acknowledge its impact and do the work to make it right by restoring these important parts of Destiny’s history.
This will take time, citing lighting changes and more since Destiny 2: Beyond Light, but it will happen. And the day we can play the entire story of Destiny 2 from start to its climactic conclusion in Final Shape will be a magical moment.
The Future – New Destiny Adventures
To say many longed for more Destiny would be grossly underselling things. People voiced their desire for a future for Destiny in force, and Bungie is finally ready to respond.
Your voices mattered, and the way you showed up made a real impact. You reminded everyone how much this world, its history, and its future still mean to you. Destiny is foundational to Bungie’s future. We have more stories to tell, new worlds to build, but we have to do it right and give our teams the time they need to do justice to this amazing universe.
All of this is to say, we are not done with Destiny.
So while a third installment wasn’t confirmed, more Destiny content is on the way. But like all good things, it will take time. But what can Bungie fans enjoy in the meantime while the hard work is being done?
It’s Not a Sprint – Marathon’s Future
Marathon will continue to be supported. And unlike what many feared when the game launched, it won’t replace Destiny as Bungie’s core focus. The developer said the following regarding the next ‘steps’ for the extraction shooter experience.
Through the remainder of Marathon’s first year, we will continue strengthening its combat, world, and competitive tension while giving players more agency in how they engage with the game. That means creating meaningful experiences whether you prefer cooperative PvE, competitive PvP, or the unpredictable tension of Marathon PvPvE.
More will be revealed later in the year, but it’s good to see the game evolving to include players of all skill sets and play styles.
Beyond Light – Impact on the Community
It takes time to repair long-standing damage, and Bungie has made promises before after major criticisms. But this time, it feels heartfelt, with a real willingness to do right by the community. I may not be a huge Destiny player, but several people here at Lords of Gaming have a history with the series.

Very emotional, goes without saying. There was hope that this would happen, and it’s a game that means so much for Lords of Gaming and Iron Lords. It means so much to me and the community.
The thing with this, is that in our current climate, it frowned upon to protest. I come from that, making your voice heard respectfully and in the proper channels. There are a lot of times where this can work and it’s a beautiful thing.
The Destiny community is one of the strongest in gaming, period. It’s powerful. The passion for this game is unlike in anything I’ve seen in covering games all these years. This was one of those momements, and seeing the Bungie directors and new studio head come out and talk about, with complete transparency, is amazing.
Everyone is behind Destiny, and seeing Sony bend their knees after the strong feedback, made me sheed tears of joy. I’m excited to revisit some of my favorite vaulted raids! Today is a great day for gamers, proving that standing on business, can bare powerful results.
