Among Us: Tips & Tricks
Among Us is a game of intrigue, trickery, and fun with friends. It is sweeping the world with sudden popularity. Everyone from famous streamers to kids to members of the United States Congress seems to be playing it. If you would like to join in on the Among Us craze but do not want to go in completely blind, here are some helpful tips and tricks.
Controls are changeable
The initial control set-up of Among Us is not great. On phones, it will force you to use a virtual “joystick” to move around. On the computer, everything is controlled by clicking with the mouse. A lot of players find these default controls to be unwieldy. Luckily, you can change them.
Under settings, there is an option to change the controls. For the phone, you can get rid of the joystick and navigate completely by tapping on the screen. On the computer, you can switch to a mouse and keyboard control. This lets you navigate using the traditional WASD keys and interact using your mouse.
Walk with the map open
A lot of new players do not realize this for a long time. You can walk while your map is open – also, you have a map. There is a map icon in the upper right of your in-game interface, right below the settings gear. Click it or press tab to pull up your map.
The map updates in real-time while you have it open. This makes it extremely useful for getting around in the game.
If you are the impostor, you can also move while your sabotage map is open. While this does not update live to show where you are, it can be helpful for throwing suspicion off of yourself.
Leave long tasks while they run
Every map in Among Us has some tasks that take a long time to complete. Whenever you start one of them, a timer will begin counting down. While the timer is going, you do not need to stay there and wait. You can leave and perform other tasks.
Staying in place while the long tasks run makes you a sitting duck. Any impostor that wanders by can kill you while your screen is obscured. Make the best of your time by starting the task and returning once it is complete.
Be aware of traps
Some rooms on every Among Us map are more dangerous than others. If you enter, you might not be able to leave. These are trap rooms. Electrical on The Skeld, the greenhouse on Mira HQ, and the decontamination locks on Polus are all examples of trap rooms.
You need to be especially careful going into any of these rooms. It is very easy for the impostor to get a kill on someone who goes in alone.
Sabotage
The impostor can sabotage the other players in Among Us. Sabotages do things such as turn off the lights, deplete the oxygen, or cause a reactor meltdown. Some sabotages will end with all of the crew dead if they do not fix the problem quickly enough. Others are merely dangerous. Either way, you should try and fix sabotages as quickly as possible.
If there is a fatal sabotage going on, you want to fix it so that the game goes on. If the sabotage is not deadly, you still want it fixed so that the impostor does not have an advantage.
