PlayStation has released some absolutely incredible video games this year. From Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart to Returnal, we have played some incredible games on PlayStation 5. However, there have been some PR inconsistencies that have made fans question PlayStations path for the future. One of these inconsistencies was certainly highlighted with the announced upgrade path for Horizon Forbidden West. After stating explicitly that Horizon Forbidden West would have a free PlayStation 5 upgrade for PlayStation 4 owners back around the launch of the new console. It appeared the company had taken this back as the upgrade from PlayStation 4 to 5 was locked behind a more expensive version of the game. This led to much outcry from fans who were upset with the misdirection from PlayStation leadership. However, it appears that PlayStation has listened to their fans’ feedback and decided to walk back this decision.

Horizon Forbidden West Free Upgrade Will Be Honored

In a new blog post today from PlayStation’s CEO Jim Ryan it was revealed that the company will be honoring its original promise. Even though the Horizon Forbidden West was delayed out of the original launch window, they will be honoring a free upgrade from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5.

“Last year we made a commitment to deliver free upgrades for our cross-gen launch titles, which included Horizon Forbidden West. While the pandemic’s profound impact pushed Forbidden West out of the launch window we initially envisioned, we will stand by our offer: Players who purchase Horizon Forbidden West on PlayStation 4 will be able to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version for free.”

Ryan even then goes on to clarify what the future of upgrades from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5 will look like. As there has been much confusion from fans about what the actual plan would be for upgrading your games to PlayStation 5. It appears now that PlayStation has a standard procedure that they will be following in the future.

“I also want to confirm today that moving forward, PlayStation first-party exclusive cross-gen titles (newly releasing on PS4 & PS5)–both digital and physical*–will offer a $10 USD digital upgrade option from PS4 to PS5. This will apply to the next God of War and Gran Turismo 7, and any other exclusive cross-gen PS4 & PS5 title published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.”

This sets the record straight and lets PlayStation fans know exactly how the future of these upgrades will look like. While some fans may not be happy about having to pay for the upgrades in the future. At the very least the transparency from PlayStation in regards to upgrades is now clear.
