Rumor: Amazon to Buy EA (Updated)
Update – CNBC sources have relayed that Amazon does not intend to make a bid to buy EA.
If this week’s news about a PS5 price increase isn’t enough for you, well you have another thing coming. Rumors suggest that another major industry-level consolidation is on the horizon. This time with Amazon seeking to acquire Electronic Arts (EA).
Rumors Suggest Amazon to Buy EA
According to GLHF, Amazon will soon announce its intention to buy EA. It was known before that EA is seeking to be acquired for some time now. There was speculation that Disney, Apple, and Amazon were all in the race to acquire the long-time video game publisher.
For Amazon, it is a smart business decision. It already has a modest footprint in the video game industry with its cloud streaming service Luna, and a few PC-based service games such as New World and Lost Ark under its belt. Should the acquisition go through, then this will be a major coup. Similar to the pending Microsoft acquisition of Activision Blizzard, this will send shockwaves across the industry in an unprecedented way. It points out that the video game industry is ripe for further consolidation on a scale that fans have never witnessed before. But this goes to show how far video games have come as a form of entertainment.
If Amazon is to buy EA, how do you feel about it? Are you excited by this prospect? Or will you be more cautiously optimistic? Let us know in the comment section below.
