Avatar: The Way of Water Swims to the Top

Fans have been waiting a long time to return to Pandora. The planet filled with so many beautiful creatures finally came back to theaters. Avatar: The Way of Water had no problems taking over the box office. It didn’t become that barn burner everyone thought it would in its first weekend.

With the Holiday season here, theaters will be a little more packed than they have been. Expect numbers for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever to jump up. Don’t expect them to jump like Avatar: The Way of Water will. This film has a chance to get close to $1 billion in two weekends. Many have said that an opening weekend of $134 million domestically is too low for this movie. One thing you need to look at from the first movie is that it would never have made $1 billion domestically. It was never able to get over $800 million. With the worldwide market, no one would be making money on their movies.

As I write this article Avatar: The Way of Water has passed $500 million in the worldwide market. With the pandemic and all these streaming services, this movie’s domestic run will not be like the first one. Which is the way it’s going to be. With three other movies coming out this franchise will be making plenty of money. Other movies like Violent Night could only make $5.1 million in their first weekend. It’s not fair that these movies have to come out against a Disney juggernaut.

Expect some resistance to Avatar: The Way of Water with Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Babylon, and Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody coming to theaters. Don’t expect any of these movies that are all getting a wide release to put up a fight in the box office.
