Darkness From a New Perspective – Kingdom Hearts VR Demo Pitch

10 Views

Kingdom Hearts is no stranger to spin-off installments. Across a chain of memories, dropping through dreams and dancing through melodies; the series has done it all.

But VR is something new. While a VR experience was made for the PlayStation 4 in the lead-up to Kingdom Hearts 3, a proper VR title never was created.

However, Sora has dabbled with true virtual reality after all.

Kingdom Hearts VR Pitch

Discovered by the YouTube channel lowkeymatt, a Kingdom Hearts-focused content creator, he shared the following on this title;

I received a message from a developer who wishes to remain anonymous. They told me that while working at a VR gaming company, they had the chance to work on some pitches revolving around Square Enix IP, one of them being Kingdom Hearts. They then sent me the pitch they created for this game, simply titled ‘Kingdom Hearts VR’. They sent it to me to show to all of you in the community and show some hidden Kingdom Hearts lost media.

As described, the VR pitch was among many others, such as one based on the mechs in Final Fantasy VI. Featured in the demo pitch is a fully controllable Sora, who can throw his Keyblade, swing it, and cast various forms of magic.

The demo itself only features two ‘worlds’, with it being based on the original Kingdom Hearts.

Overall Thoughts on VR Demo

As a fan of the series, seeing lost media like this come out is interesting. Other lost media regarding Kingdom Hearts has come out, but rarely is it centered on a gameplay experience.

A full-on VR title has a ton of potential, considering the medium. Sora being able to pull off various attacks from the games themselves, the Disney worlds themselves becoming literal amusement park rides and a new way to experience the narrative would’ve been awesome.

Despite never becoming a full-on release, preserving game history like this is important. And who knows? Maybe Disney and Square Enix could revisit this content in the future.
