A Closer Look at Urban Warriors at Anime NYC 2024

Urban Warriors is a 3D brawler that pays homage to classic SEGA arcade titles like Power Stone and Streets of Rage, offering a frantic and engaging gameplay experience. The game boasts a surprising amount of depth, featuring mechanics like proper blocking and parrying, alongside the ability to pick up and throw weapons. This depth is further enhanced by polished controls, ensuring every action feels responsive and satisfying.

The game’s core gameplay shines in its “Verses” mode, a direct inspiration from Power Stone. Here players can engage in intense arena battles. This mode utilizes the same mechanics as the main game, offering a robust and engaging competitive experience.

Urban Warriors early access title with all 8 playable characters

Currently available in Early Access on PC, Urban Warriors is set to leave Early Access in 2025, with console versions planned for the same year. While the game is still under development, it already feels polished and enjoyable, thanks to its solid foundation and engaging gameplay.

Using AI in Game Development

One interesting aspect of Urban Warriors is its use of AI voices for its eight playable characters. The developers have stated that they are currently using ElevenLabs synthetic voices, which are not clones of real people, and plan to hire professional voice actors once the game achieves success. This detail went unnoticed during our experience with the game, highlighting the polished nature of the AI voice work.

Our Thoughts on the Game

Overall, Urban Warriors promises to be a fun and nostalgic experience for fans of classic brawlers. Its depth, polished controls, and engaging “Verses” mode make it a promising title with a lot of potential. The game’s development team is clearly passionate about their project, and their dedication shines through in the polished Early Access build. We are personally excited to see how the game evolves and expands upon its already solid foundation.
