During this generation, PlayStation isn’t shy about revisiting its PS4 library. Games like Uncharted 4, Last of Us Part 1 & 2, and Horizon Zero Dawn got remasters or full-on remakes for the PS5.

This trend seemingly will continue with Days Gone, the Studio Bend open-world zombie romp.

How to Transfer PS4 data to PS5

The Original ‘Days Gone Remastered’ Rumor

When the rumors surrounding Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered began to surface, people also mentioned a ‘less exciting’ remaster was coming soon. Jeff Grubb commented on this with VGC’s Jordan Middler collaborating on the rumor.

Fast forward to December 2024, and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered has been released on PlayStation 5 and PC platforms.

Tuning Up the Engine – Steam Backend Update for ‘Days Gone’ Discovered

Days before the Game Awards, rumblings about Days Gone Remastered have surfaced.

As reported by kitguru, ResetEra user dex3108 noticed activity for Days Gone on Steam. This could mean anything, as games frequently get updated on Steam’s backend. Even games were delisted for many years. But with the prior rumors surrounding Days Gone Remastered, this could indicate the announcement is incoming.

And with PlayStation usually having a noticeable presence at the Game Awards, this being one of their reveals wouldn’t be that surprising.

Thoughts on PlayStation’s Remasters/Remakes

I completely welcome the idea of PlayStation revisiting its classics and giving them a new lease on life. However, regarding its PlayStation 4 library, I begin having reservations.

Many of the PS4 games PlayStation has been remastering for PS5, already got updates to leverage the enhanced hardware. Last of Us Part 2, Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon Zero Dawn, Ratchet & Clank, God of War 2018, and Days Gone all received 60FPS patches when played on PS5. And some games, like Until Dawn leverage the hardware without a proper update, due to their unlocked frame rate.

So when most of the games I mentioned got native PS5 versions with the biggest difference being a slight resolution bump or better visuals when the games already looked great, it’s not exciting seeing them get PS5 versions.

This is especially true when you consider many PlayStation 4 games people would love full-on remakes for, like Bloodborne, for which PlayStation is purposefully teasing its fanbase.

What Remasters Are Next?

If I had to guess, one must look at the PC ports that PlayStation has released regarding future remaster projects. It could be cost-effective to translate those PC releases to PS5 and utilize their High or Ultra presets for both tiers of PlayStation 5 console (base and pro).

Considering this, I imagine the 2018 God of War will come after Days Gone Remastered. It would follow Horizon Zero Dawn’s footsteps, utilizing the technology the sequel (God of War Ragnarok) created and implementing that into the predecessor.

Other possibilities could include a Gravity Rush Collection, combining the PS4 Remaster of the original and the PS4 sequel and giving them full 4K and 60FPS support. A film is in the works, so PlayStation likely wants a product to align with its release. I would welcome this more than God of War 2018 or Days Gone, considering it’s a franchise that could benefit from more eyes on it.

Closing Thoughts

Regardless of if this rumor is true, PlayStation is pushing content out faster. The development time for its biggest projects takes longer and while I would love to see remasters/remakes of PS2 and PS3-era games, that would take more resources.

And with major failures under them in 2024, they likely cannot afford to spend those resources on an InFamous Trilogy or Ratchet & Clank Future Saga remaster collections. Hopefully, when the situation improves for PlayStation’s finances, they will be more willing to invest in fan-requested remasters and remakes.
