Dragon Quest 40th Anniversary Recap

It’s a little insane to think that the Dragon Quest series has been around for four decades now. Most games can barely manage to stay in the public eye for one or even two, if they’re lucky. But the series is special, with many mainline entries and even more spin-offs. Earlier this year, they even “reimagined” the seventh entry to critical acclaim and just recently had their 40th anniversary stream for eager fans to know “what’s coming next?”

Their 40th anniversary stream only went on for 10 minutes, which, in comparison to the 35th anniversary stream (that went on for almost an hour), contained much less news, but sometimes less is more. Below will be everything you need to know from yesterday’s Dragon Quest 40th Anniversary stream and much more!

The Headliner – Dragon Quest 12: Beyond Dreams

This is what everybody was waiting for: actual news on the next mainline Dragon Quest game. Well, we got an actual look at it, albeit still very early in development for certain reasons. The trailer will be down below!

The game has been rebooted, obviously. Everyone who watched the original reveal trailer will know this, as the game was originally supposed to be called “The Flames of Fate“. While they did not get into the specific reasons as to why it was rebooted aside from a reshuffling of the team, and “many hurdles” being hit during development. It was explained that the direction of Dragon Quest 12: Beyond Dreams is going to be much different than what the original vision was.

What little we did see from the trailer was admittedly interesting. The main character’s design has sparked some discussion online, but the rest of what we can presume are the party members are an interesting choice. One being a robot with a female protagonist and a green dragonkin companion as well. As of right now, we do not know what its release window is or what platforms the game will launch on.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World

From its announcement, we only know a little bit about this title. It will, according to Square Enix, feature 2 characters, that being Bianca and Nera from Dragon Quest 5: Hand of the Heavenly Bride.

There was an announcement trailer, featuring the main character’s artwork, but not much, which you can find below!

Dragon Quest 11 Arrives on the Nintendo Switch 2 in September!

For those who have yet to play Dragon Quest, the 11th mainline entry, and arguably one of the best in the series, is making its way to the Nintendo Switch 2 soon. On September 24th, you can finally dive into this 100+ JRPG on Nintendo’s latest console with 2 types of display modes on the go or at home. You can choose from “quality” or “performance” modes, and the trade-offs are not detailed at this time.

Dragon Quest 1/2/3’s HD-2D Remakes Have Sold 4 Million Copies

Finally, they announced that the HD-2D remakes of the original Dragon Quest games have sold a collective 4 million copies across the board. For fans of really old-school JRPGs, you should join the club and experience where the series started nearly four decades ago!

But these were the highlights from the 40th anniversary of the series. If you would like to watch the “Update” video, featuring Yuji Horii, the game designer of the series, you can find it right here!
