Future of Portable PlayStation – PS Portal Can Play PS5 Games via PS Plus Premium
When the PlayStation Portal was released in 2023, many were confused at the lack of PS Plus Cloud support at launch. The device was exclusively a Remote Play accessory, playing your PlayStation 5 over WiFi or your local connection.
But it seems that Sony is finally unlocking the device’s true potential. As of this writing, PlayStation 5 games can now stream over the Cloud through Sony’s PS Plus Premium offering.
PlayStation Premium Support on PS Portal
PlayStation released an update for the PlayStation Portal, giving players much-requested features that have been asked since its 2023 launch. Sony has stated the following on the PlayStation Blog;
This update will also include a beta version of a new feature that many fans have been asking for – support for cloud streaming on PS Portal. When the update is live, PlayStation Plus Premium members will be able to participate in a beta for cloud streaming on PS Portal, allowing select PS5 games in the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog* to be streamed directly from our servers, even without a PS5 console.
Despite the Blog post only mentioning over 100 titles, the entire PS5 library on PS Plus Premium is playable, including several PS1, PSP, and PS2 Classics that have been added over the past few years.
Importance of PS Premium on Portal
A major reason I was not interested in the Portal was specifically how limited its feature set was. Being only able to Remote Play from your PS5 is fine, but when the competition lets you stream games that you both own and have access to via Xbox Game Pass, Sony needs to do better.
As someone who dabbled with PS Premium Streaming, the PS5 Game Streaming is impressive. It felt near-native over my wired connection. That library being accessible to PS Portal owners adds value to the accessory.
The beta only includes PS5 titles, but PS4 and PS3 games will likely be supported in the future. When that happens, the massive collection of PlayStation games will be playable on the PS Portal, making the ultimate PlayStation handheld. If you have a good wireless connection, that is.
Closing Thoughts
PlayStation investing in their Cloud offerings is important, considering they have been trying to get more games on other platforms the past year. So the PS Portal is a key pillar in their plans, so releasing updates for that successful accessory is great to see.
