When Xbox released Project X-Cloud a few years ago, the program was originally a supplement to Game Pass, only working with games added to the service. Games that leave Game Pass will still support X-Cloud, but even PlayStation started supporting people’s personal game libraries on the Cloud in 2023.
But starting November 2024, Xbox Cloud Gaming will support thousands of Xbox games.
X-Cloud Getting Upgraded – Personal Game Library Support
As reported by the Verge, they state the following regarding X-Cloud getting a major update;
Microsoft is planning to support the streaming of Xbox game libraries next month. Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans tell The Verge that the company is getting ready to test the ability to stream games that you own that aren’t part of the existing Xbox Game Pass library.
As part of a long-running project known as Project Lapland inside of Microsoft, the software giant has been readying its Xbox Cloud Gaming servers to be able to support streaming thousands of games. I’m told Microsoft will first test its new Xbox Cloud Gaming streaming capabilities with Xbox Insiders in November, before expanding them to more Xbox users and more games.
Importance for Xbox’s Future
It has been no secret Xbox longs to expand its reach to other places, with X-Cloud being a key factor in this initiative. You can cloud stream Xbox games easily through the Cloud Gaming App on Android platforms, a web browser on your PC, and even through a workaround on iOS devices. Entire handhelds were created specifically in mind for Xbox Cloud Gaming as well.
Save for remote play support, streaming one’s library was not possible on Xbox. Services like PlayStation Plus Premium and G-Force Now have this support, both services supporting the best-performing versions over the cloud.
Cloud Streaming through Xbox being able to match some of the features of their competition is important considering the company wants to get engagement and sales from other platforms.
Closing Thoughts
While I never really used X-Cloud outside of testing the service out, the requested features of the community coming to it are fantastic. The idea of being able to pick up your playthrough of Metaphor: ReFantazio on your phone or getting some touchdowns in College Football on your PC through Cloud Streaming sounds great for on-the-go gaming.
Xbox Cloud Gaming supporting the new, current, and vast back catalog present in the Xbox servers over the cloud is important for Xbox as a brand.
