After months of speculation, FromSoftware has officially announced that Elden Ring DLC is in active development. Little is currently known about the expansion, other than its name- Shadow of the Erdtree. Even so, that will surely be enough to temporarily satiate fans who have been patiently waiting for this news for months.

Elden Ring DLC Has Been Speculated for Months

Given the monumental success that Elden Ring has enjoyed since its release, this news, which was officially announced on FromSoftware’s social media platforms, will be met with excitement and anticipation from millions of gamers around the globe. The game has been FromSoftware’s biggest success to date, and the 20 million copies sold so far easily dwarfs any other title in their library, including the acclaimed Dark Souls trilogy, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and Bloodborne.

Other than the title of the DLC being Shadow of the Erdtree, Hidetaka Miyazaki’s team hasn’t revealed any details about the expansion yet, but there are various directions it could go in thanks to the huge scope of the Lands Between. It’s entirely possible that this expansion takes place on existing parts of the map, but this would go against FromSoftware‘s usual style of creating brand-new areas for its DLC offerings.

Aside from Sekiro, every one of the Soulsborne games was given expansive DLC which took place in brand-new areas. The quality of these paid expansions has been incredible, with them often surpassing the base game in terms of challenge and raw difficulty. Bloodborne‘s The Old Hunters, in particular, is often cited as one of the best DLCs ever. In this regard, Elden Ring is in great company, and there is every reason to believe that its DLC will be something special indeed.

In terms of when to expect this DLC, at the moment it’s anyone’s guess. It could be that FromSoftware has had it in development for a while, and therefore the length of time between announcement to release could be just a few short months. If, however, it has only just gone into active development, then fans may not get their hands on it for a while yet. Hopefully, FromSoftware announces some more concrete news on the Elden Ring expansion soon.
