Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Boss Guide – Zhang Bao, Zhang Jiao, Aoye
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty follows the Soulsborne genre tradition of vicious boss fights. After playing through the game ourselves, we’ve assembled multiple guides and strategies for players, including a multi-part Wo Long Boss Guide. This is part two of many, and includes help for the Zhang Bao, Zhang Jiao, and Aoye fights. While you’re here, check out some Wo Long gameplay tips to help get you started.
Zhang Bao, General of Earth
Zhang Bao brings challengers magical pain. Many of his attacks come from a far and he zips around the battlefield. Go through his list of attacks and abilities below and our tips after:
Attacks
- Teleports around the battlefield
- Area of effect (AOE) fire shots around him
- Fireball in a circular shot pattern
- Unblockables
- Projectile (Easier to parry with practice)
- Grapple (Harder to parry even with practice)
Strategy
Zhang is small and fast due to his teleporting moves. However this fight is a little crazy from start to finish.
Our biggest tip: avoid his unblockable attacks at all costs. They dole out massive damage and you won’t live through much outside of that. Getting hit by them will have you using all the health you have in reserve. You really want to hit him a few times and move on. Don’t stick around for too long because he will punish you for it quickly with his teleporting moves.
His unblockable projectile’s cue starts with a red glow. He’ll start glowing and a rock on fire forms next to him. When he puts his hands up and glows red, run. Parry when you feel comfortable doing it, but that’s it. Only parry if you feel comfortable with the timing. After a few tries and learning the timing for his Unblockables you should have no issues beating him. Also, level up your Water virtue because it will help you survive his fire attacks.
Zhang Jiao, General of Heaven
Zhang Jiao may be a bit more recognizable than the others in this boss guide. He was featured in the game’s reveal trailer last year.
Attacks
- Basic Cane Attacks
- Lightning attacks from the sky which deal area of effect (AOE) damage
- Tornados
- Stays on the field
- AOE that circles around Zhang Jiao that travels the battlefield
- Directional Tornado attack that he aims at you
- Unblockable Moves
- Grapple
- Projectile
- Downward staff strike
Strategy
Zhang Jiao was one of the easier fights we had in Wo Long. His unblockables were pretty easy to see and dodge, although it might take you a few deaths to get the timing down.
The best strategy revolves around close quarters. Get close to him during his normal attacks, and guard and parry them. Then, if your Spirit Gauge (lower middle of the HUD) is filled to the right with blue, use the spirit attacks with a spirit attack (R1/RB/Shift + Left Click) to do massive damage to his stagger bar. When he starts the AOE attacks and Tornados, run away. Zhang Jiao will eventually calm down but until then, flee. Parrying his unblockables will help shorten the fight even more. His grapple is the best one to take advantage of, but the projectile is doable with practice.
Aoye
Attacks
- Long range reach attack long reach basic attack that he does a few times easy to parry though
- Back arm attack attacks you with the arms it has on its back
- Close range horn attack Get close enough it will hit you with its horns
- Ice tosses to cover the map Will throw ice around the map to make it harder to move around
- Ice line attack
- Unblockable
- Grab move
- Front Arm Stab
- Arm-powered charge attack
Strategy
Aoye is huge monster that takes up decent space on the battlefield. Most of his attacks come in pairs. That said, this evil cow is generally slow. He will speed up his attacks when hurt but overall Aoye is not the hardest fight here.
Start this fight as aggressively as possible. Just run up to him, attacking him relentlessly. However, look out for his front arms. Get ready to guard and parry when he does. Do not go behind him unless it’s a last resort. His back arms make behind him way more dangerous.
Sometimes, he’ll stop for a second. That is normally followed by an unblockable, front arm attack. Speaking of unblockable attacks, his favorite time to use his charge attack is when he sees you healing. Your cue to dodge is when he starts slamming his front arms down in front of him.
After you attack him a few times he will just be more aggressive with using unblockables and quicker. As long as you try and stay in front of him and keep parrying and blocking him you can quickly stagger him. This boss is not extremely hard but can be annoying because of how much he moves around by jumping and charging.
