4 minutes read

The post-COVID age hasn’t been kind to the movie industry. While theatres have been having a harder time trying to fill the seats, thanks mainly to the rise of streaming and lack of must-see movies, it seems that 2024 has turned a slight corner. With nostalgia making a comeback and superhero movies once again filling theater seats, it seems that movies have plenty to offer for different audiences. With that said, the winners of Lords of Gaming’s 2024 Golden Lance Award for Movie of the Year.

Winner – Deadpool & Wolverine

Deadpool and Wolverine standing next to each other

When it comes to the Movie of the Year,  I felt it was a no-brainer here. Deadpool & Wolverine blew any movie away I have seen this year. The combination of Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) and Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) was a true match made in heaven. You get Deadpool’s amazing humor that will have you crying tears of laughter for hours as well as Wolverine’s indirect humor while trying to be more serious. It was a perfect combination. Plus you got callbacks to other characters of the past like Elektra, Blade, and more. Then there was plenty of action for the action buffs who wanted to see that. By far, Deadpool & Wolverine is the Best Movie of the Year!

Runner Up – Dune: Part Two

Dune: Part Two is a cinematic spectacle reminiscent of the grandeur of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. It continues the journey of Paul Atreides in exile in Arrakis, following the brutal decimation of his House in the first film.

Director Denis Villeneuve excels in immersing the audience further into Frank Herbert’s epic saga, exploring the intricate politics, mysticism, and interpersonal dynamics of the Fremen people. Timothée Chalamet delivers the best performance of his career, portraying Paul’s struggle with destiny opposite Zendaya’s Chani, whose developing bond with him is the emotional center of the story. The tension between Paul and Rebecca Ferguson’s Lady Jessica, who subtly manipulates the Fremen from behind the scenes, provides compelling conflict that really enriches the narrative. We also get a more in-depth look into the antagonists, with chilling performances from Austin Butler and Stellan Skarsgård.

With its stunning practical visual effects, Hans Zimmer’s entrancing score, breathtaking desert vistas, and awe-inspiring sandworms, Dune: Part Two is a monumental achievement in filmmaking. Though it begins as a slow burn, the nearly three-hour runtime flies by, thanks to its engrossing storytelling and masterful pacing. This sci-fi masterpiece earns its place on our Movie of the Year list and we eagerly await Villenueve’s follow-up in Dune: Messiah

Runner Up – Transformers One

Many fans initially came into Transformers One with very low expectations, especially since Lord Cognito is a Transformer Generation 1 connoisseur. But in all honestly, the movie did a great job in its adaption of the old lore. Especially Optimus Prime’s origins story still sticks out as well as Megatron’s link with Megatronis are all fantastically portrayed.

Transformers One definitely has some great feel-good and comedy moments and the vocal work really elevated the movie. Orion Pax, in particular, shows him as rambunctious and a little bit aggressive with a big heart, and how it led him to become the Optimus Prime we all know and love was an endearing part of Transformers One.

The CGI and art style used in Transformers One were unique and fantastic. There were also a lot of great throwbacks that fans of the franchise would appreciate. The film paid homage to the old-head fans of Generation 1 while also ushering in a new generation of fans that could come to appreciate the Transformers universe.
