Awakened Light – Devil May Cry V: Devil Hunter Edition Review (Nintendo Switch 2)

What is Devil May Cry V?

When Devil May Cry V was released in 2019, it was a grand return for a legendary Capcom franchise. Featuring slick combat and so much more, it was a fantastic return to form for a dormant series.

Years later, the game comes to Nintendo Switch 2. Does it still pull that devil trigger? Or is this a light that should’ve stayed buried? I’m proud to report that this is one devil hunt worth embarking on.

Taking place after the events of Devil May Cry 4, Nero and Dante, alongside series newcomer V, team up to take down the demon Urizen from harnessing human blood as a source of pure power. The narrative kicks off a wave of missions combining exploration, stylish combat, and major character moments.

Dale Vanfossen, who originally reviewed the game on Xbox One X, said the following about why it’s such a strong return to form for one of Capcom’s pillar franchises.

Devil May Cry V is a love letter to everything in the franchise thus far that has made fans love it as much as they have. Everything from the story to the gameplay and music just feels right and by extension, the player feels right at home coming back to such a beloved series. While no game is perfect Devil May Cry V certainly comes close to being about as good as you can get for an action game.

Revisiting this modern action classic, I had a blast fighting through demons and loving the characters. Nero is a huge example of this, having downright hysterical moments that also look cool as hell. One example is before a boss encounter, where he is thrown into a moving trailer. Once it lands perfectly, he kicks the door down as if he wasn’t tumbling around inside it.

Moments like that are balanced with genuinely heartfelt moments between him and other characters as the story concludes, making his character one I connected with. Overall, I loved my time revisiting Devil May Cry V, with a big part of that being the game’s fantastic combat system.

Stylish Action – Combat & Gameplay

And the game’s awesome action combat still holds up years later, with Nero controlling like a dream on Nintendo Switch 2. Whenever you are playing in Docked or Handheld mode, pulling off sick combos feels second nature with the game’s tight control scheme.

Each of the base game’s three characters is unique. While Dante can switch styles on the fly and uses a wide array of moves, Nero is the streamlined option with an awesome long-distance grapple with his Demon Arm and a fun selection of Devil Breakers.

The most unique of the trio has to be V, commanding shadow demons to fight for him. It still feels fun, with him having just as much style and personality as the brash Dante and Nero. But the Switch 2 version doesn’t just include these three demon hunters.

Bury the Light – Virgil & Special Edition Content

Releasing after the Special Edition on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, Virgil is now added to the base game. The demon uses several moves introduced in Devil May Cry V, and others from DMC: Devil May Cry and Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition.

Also included are extra costumes and music options in combat, allowing players to mix and match things to their liking. These include DLC Devil Brakers for Nero, like Mega Man’s Mega Buster.

While the new Devil Brakers add variety to Nero’s moveset, the inclusion of Virgil as a playable character adds replay value to the base experience. His moveset feels very different from the other Demon Hunters, making combat encounters feel fresh and brand new.

But one question remains: how does this run on Switch 2?

Portable Powertrips – Performance & Visuals

The answer to that is a resounding accomplishment. Running on Capcom’s RE Engine, the game runs at a smooth 60 FPS on Nintendo’s hybrid handheld. And the best part? The improved visuals the Special Edition added to Series X|S and PS5 carry over to the Switch 2 version. However, the optional Ray Tracing mode is not included.

Digital Foundry’s look at the impressive performance and visuals of DMC V on Switch 2.

A welcome feature is the game running at an unlocked frame rate. It hits 90 FPS or higher in Docked or Handheld mode. Playing an action game like Devil May Cry at borderline 120 FPS on a modern handheld device is simply astonishing.

Head Banging – Audio & Music

I have to give a special shoutout to Devil May Cry V‘s soundtrack. Featuring awesome vocal themes, they dynamically evolve the better you play.

From the screamo banger for Dante, the emotionally powerful theme for Virgil, and the punk-rock vibes of ‘Devil Trigger’, each track matches its respective character like a glove.

There is no better feeling than pulling off an amazing slate of combos and stylish maneuvers, and your rank hitting S and the full vocals blasting off the screen. This applies to the optional music too, a welcome touch.

Accessibility Options in Devil May Cry V: Demon Hunter Edition

Regarding accessibility options, Devil May Cry V on Switch 2 features fully customizable controls, allowing full button remapping. This is common for PC ports of games, but not on console, so this is welcomed. In addition, the game has detailed tutorials and the option to test out new moves/abilities that players unlock throughout the adventure.

In addition, if you need some help early on with combat encounters, an ‘Auto Assist’ option can be enabled (activated by clicking the Right Stick). This automatically performs higher-level combos, which is awesome for those new to character-action games like Devil May Cry.

Closing Thoughts on Devil May Cry V: Devil Hunter Edition

When it was originally released, Devil May Cry V was a beloved character action title and a glorious return for the series. Playing it on Switch 2, it not only holds up perfectly, but it is yet another example of Capcom’s mastery of the Switch 2 hardware.

Running at a blistering frame rate and sporting impressive visuals with little to no cutbacks, this continues the company’s streak that started with Resident Evil Requiem and Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection. I can easily recommend this to anyone who loves action games and wants to kill some demons on the go.
