Earwig and the Witch is Limited this Weekend
This weekend The Little Things was able to take over the top spot at the box office. Studio Ghibli’s first CGI film was also released this weekend. Earwig and the Witch has a limited opening this weekend as it also released on HBO Max.
The Little Things continues to dominate the box office. The film grossed an estimated $2.1 million this weekend. Even with an online release, this film was able to have a worldwide total of $12.4 million. Viewers still have plenty of time to watch the movie on HBO Max before it’s removed. Judas and the Black Messiah will be the next movie to land on HBO Max with its release in a limited number of theaters on February 12th.
Earwig and the Witch only grossed $99,941 in its first weekend. This movie opened up in 430 theaters and is available to watch on HBO Max. This movie hasn’t done very well with critics. It dropped down to 32% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film also opened up at number eleven on the box office list. Right behind a rerelease of The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring. This is Studio Ghibli’s first CGI film, I hope that Earwig and the Witch don’t affect the studio’s desire to create more films like this in the future. Their past hand-drawn films are something that fans treasure and love.
One thing that I miss writing about is the Marvel juggernaut. Black Widow is still on track to be released on May 7th, 2021. That movie should easily dominate the box office for weeks. With nothing being released in a wide release this weekend, the top three movies barely changed. In fact, it is surprising that these movies have still grossed over $1 million.
Weekend Top Three
3. The Marksman $1 million
2. The Croods: A New Age $1.7 million
1. The Little Things $2.1 million
Next weekend Land is going to be released. Followed by Tom and Jerry on February 26th. Disney will be releasing Raya and the Last Dragon on March 6th. Slowly fans will start to get movies back in the theaters. It may be a few years before we start to see the numbers we had two years ago. Look for Earwig and the Witch to climb up the box office ladder. I doubt it will ever get in the top three domestically.
