In an ever-crowded video game market, it takes a lot for games to get noticed. In particular, the puzzle genre is one of the oldest in the industry. Games have tried to reinvent puzzle games time and time again, and they continue to do so. Enter, OctoMaze, a puzzle game that wears its influences proudly on its sleeve.
OctoMaze Wears Its Influences on Its Sleeves
Developed by Octogon Game Studios (a suitable name if you ask me) the game puts players to solve puzzles using an octopus’ tentacles. The tentacles can both destroy enemies and collect items and objects. Now, where the game takes its influence is quite apparent. OctoMaze proudly takes cues from classics such as Snake, Tapper, Oil’s Well, Anteater, Bomberman, Sokoban, and the infamous Frogger.
Now that is a lot of influences, but the game somehow manages to bring them all together. You can see in the trailer above how all the different manage to work in the game.
Game Features
Below is a list of the game’s prominent features:
- Five enemy types
- Different objects to interact with including meteorites, crates, tile holes
- Multiple levels, with varying challenges, environments, power-ups, and collectibles;
- Nightmare bonus levels
- Various types of obstacles and interactive environments such as lasers, flamethrowers, teleports, centerpieces, and surprising tiles that are controlled by buttons/lasers
