One of Square Enix’s most recent and most consistent successes over the last 8 years has been their HD-2D video games. Starting with Octopath Traveler back in 2018, Square Enix has gone on to make a plethora of titles in the style. From Triangle Strategy, Live A Live, The Adventures of Elliot, and even two more installments in the series that started it all with Octopath Traveler 2 in 2023 and Octopath Traveler 0 more recently. But aside from a new turn-based Final Fantasy in HD-2D coming later this year, Square Enix may already be cooking Octopath Traveler 3 behind the scenes.
In an article from Nintendoeverything, they detailed how, in an article from Japanese media outlet Dengenki that interviews Square Enix’s Tomoya Asano, the Studio Head on Creative Business Unit 5, which is now fully in charge of the HD-2D games, the third installment of the series has been acknowledged. Here is what was said!
What was said about Octopath Traveler 3
For transparency’s sake, the translation of the Dengenki article, listed by Nintendoeverything, was done with translation. So what was said may not be entirely precise, but they did mention Octopath Traveler 3. In the translation provided by Nintendoeverything, they said the following:
HD-2D, which was born with Octopath Traveler, has gained recognition over the past eight years, and I feel that it has spread considerably now.
Octopath Traveler has also reached its eighth anniversary, and we are now looking ahead to its tenth anniversary. I am well aware that expectations for 3 are the highest, but… I feel a little sorry that I can’t say anything at the moment. – Tomoya Asano

While the title is not officially revealed or confirmed by Square Enix proper. The acknowledgement from Tomoya Asano does hint that the game could be getting worked on. Given how high the bar of expectations for the next installment is after the last two titles, it’s a relief to hear them also acknowledge the pressure they feel. But to what extent the game is being worked on is definitely unknown. As well as when we will see anything about the game, too.
