One of this generations biggest success stories must be Capcom. As a publisher, they have released many great titles. From the rocking Devil May Cry V and Monster Hunter continuing to rise speak for themselves. But one franchise is above them all, and that is Resident Evil.

Over the past two generations, the series has released quality remakes and great original installments consistently. Following the critically beloved Resident Evil 4 remake, the company is moving forward on another.

Getting Another Remake – Resident Evil 1 Remake Rumored

Reported by PlayStation Lifestyle, a remake of the original Resident Evil is in production and set for release in 2026.

Rumor of the RE1 remake first came from an Arab Resident Evil community that goes by PRE_Alarabiya on X. The report was corroborated by DanielRPK (via Reddit), who has a pretty good track record. No further information was revealed but according to PRE_Alarabiya, RE1 remake will release sometime in 2026.

In addition, details on Resident Evil 9 join this information, stating that Leon will return as the main character.

Double Dipping

Not unlike Sony and Naughty Dog’s Last of Us, the original Resident Evil 1 already has received a remake. While it does not play like the modern titles, the GC Remake modernized the experience enough for many to enjoy it. Said remake is playable on modern-day platforms and even has adjusted movement options, removing the tank-controls.

Clearly, this remake would be an effort to ‘modernize’ the original experience to fit alongside Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4. Potentially even bundle all four games together in a collection for a new generation of consoles, considering Switch 2 and Xbox’s next generation platform would be out by 2026.

Overall Thoughts

While I enjoy the series, I am a very casual fan. I loved the original Resident Evil 4 and greatly enjoyed the time I put into Resident Evil 7. Seeing the original get a remake that plays like the other modern installments is ideal for someone like me, but will it be to a die-hard fan?

Many die-hard fans would likely rather lesser-known games to get the remake treatment like Code Veronica or even something like Resident Evil 5 to be rebuilt without the co-op focus.
