SEGA Delists Classic Games Across Xbox, PC, Switch, and PlayStation Platforms
While known for always releasing classic games every generation, SEGA has been creating additional steps to access original releases, such as the 2011 Sonic Generations release and the Classic Sonic titles.
However, on December 6th, their biggest delisting wave will commence, with many games across SEGA’s vast library of platforms leaving PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch.
SEGA Delisting Classic Games
As reported by Sonic Stadium, SEGA announced that many games they’ve re-released on current platforms will be delisted on December 6th, 2024. If you buy them now, you can easily access them. But once delisted, you cannot purchase them.
The full list of delisted games across all platforms is on SEGA’s QA page, which can be found here. They include major releases from SEGA’s back catalog. This includes major releases like NIGHTS into Dreams, the SEGA Genesis Collection on all major platforms, and even Sonic spin-offs like Sonic the Fighters.
This has a major impact on SEGA’s BC library on Xbox platforms, with the remaining XBLA arcade titles being inaccessible following the December 6th cut-off date.
Potential Future Collection?
One reason for this mass delisting could suggest an updated collection is on the way, housing all the delisted titles on an updated emulator. The latest SEGA Genesis Collection on Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch is ‘fine’ but far from perfect.
The SEGA Genesis emulator used for Switch Online is better for image quality and input latency, so a collection using that emulator as a base could be released next year. But something SEGA has never done was have a collection containing ALL of SEGA’s consoles.
While the many Sonic collections on GameCube, PS2, and original Xbox contained Genesis and Game Gear titles in one collection, they never housed Saturn or Dreamcast games. And with many Saturn and Dreamcast remasters being part of the delisted titles, could that imply a collection featuring every SEGA console under one launcher is on the way?
Closing Thoughts
SEGA has an important place in gaming history. While some consoles, like Saturn or Dreamcast, never got proper collections, SEGA Genesis was well represented on modern platforms.
If no updated collection is on the way… That means major titles in SEGA’s history vanishing for seemingly, no valid reason. And as someone who got their Series X for the backward compatibility support, additional games leaving that is disappointing to see as well.
Hopefully, we can report on a massive collection this Fall or next year, having the deslited games and potentially additional SEGA classics, that everyone can enjoy.
