Rising from the Grave – Redfall Getting Final Update
When the news of Xbox and Bethesda leadership shuttering studios released, the fate of Redfall was in the background. While the game did receive its promised 60FPS update, the game was on track for other needed support. This includes but is not limited to AI adjustments and an offline mode.
Lords of Gaming and other media outlets reported that the title’s May Update got canceled. But it seems Redfall is indeed rising from the grave, getting a final update in the future.
Final Redfall Update
The official Redfall Twitter stated the following:
Thank you for all your supportive messages.
We are working to release our final update, Game Update 4, that brings revamped Neighborhood and Nest systems, Single Player Pausing, Offline Mode, and more.
We’ll provide additional details soon. Thank you all.
A major aspect of this update is the ability to play offline, a feature that is not present in the current build as of this writing. Considering the studio is being shuttered and the uncertainty about Microsoft’s support of the game’s servers, getting this out is important.
In addition, Arkane Austin’s lights remaining on just for a while longer is ideal. It was reported that despite Arkane Austin’s closure, staff will be moving throughout Bethesda. So there is a future where some of this team could assist in developing Blade or even an Arkane Lyon-developed Dishonored.
Overall Thoughts
Let’s make no mistake, I am relieved to see this title will live on. Even if the quality of Redfall left a lot to be desired, the game didn’t deserve to be lost to time.
Microsoft and Bethesda letting the studio finish their final patch, as they did with Tango Gameworks for Hi-Fi Rush, is fantastic. It ensures both games are in a good ‘state’ for game preservation and future re-releases on other platforms.
My main question is a sense of confusion. Why say support for the Redfall ends when an update is still releasing? Why shutter studios under one publisher but announce a new AAA one within Activision? It seems internally across the Microsoft Gaming family; confusion is in the air.
And hopefully, this will be sorted out before or during the Xbox Games Showcase in June 2024.
