Square Enix has announced a major Dragon Quest 100 million sales milestone as the legendary RPG series celebrates its 40th anniversary. Nearly four decades after the original Dragon Quest launched in Japan in 1986, the series has officially surpassed 100 million games sold worldwide.
The achievement arrives during an active period for the franchise, with several recent remakes introducing classic adventures to a new generation while more Dragon Quest games are already on the horizon.
Dragon Quest Reaches 100 Million Sales
Since its debut in 1986, Dragon Quest has grown into one of the most recognizable names in the JRPG genre. The franchise now includes 11 mainline entries alongside numerous spin-offs and adaptations across anime, manga, novels, films, and other media.
Recent releases have helped bring some of the franchise’s earliest adventures back into the spotlight. Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake and Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake recreated the complete Erdrick Trilogy with Square Enix’s HD-2D visual style, gameplay updates, and additional story content.
The publisher followed those releases with Dragon Quest VII Reimagined in early 2026, offering another take on the 2000 RPG with redesigned visuals, streamlined exploration, and expanded narrative elements.
More Dragon Quest Is on the Way
Reaching 100 million games sold doesn’t mean the series is slowing down. Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams remains in development as the next mainline installment in the franchise.
Before then, Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on September 24. Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World will follow on December 3, 2026, for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and Xbox on PC.
Fans have also recently received Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD-, bringing another classic entry back as part of the franchise’s 40th anniversary celebrations.
The Dragon Quest 100 million sales milestone represents another major chapter in the series’ four-decade history. With Dragon Quest XII in development and several additional releases arriving throughout 2026, Square Enix is already setting the stage for what comes next for one of gaming’s longest-running RPG franchises.
